What a gift it is to be in learning together! In the morning of Day 2, Eileen Reed and Maurice Stevens gave us an overview of the difference between diversity (more than one person in a room brings diversity), inclusion (making the choice for bringing all people into the room and engaging them) and equity (unlike equality, where everyone gets the same, with equity everyone gets what they need) . With diversity you count people. With inclusion, people count. Equity is acknowledging there's not a level playing field -- we have different needs. Eileen reminded us that equality means we all get the same pair of shoes, but with equity, we get shoes that fit us. We cannot have these conversations without talking about power and race. We had a robust and vibrant discussion around these topics in our circle. We were reminded it's complicated.
